Mr. Viral Acharya, took charge as RBI Deputy Governor, for a three year period. The Central Bank accordingly reallocated the various portfolios on account of the new Deputy Governor’s joining. He will in charge of Monetary and Economic Research department, Corporate Strategy and Budget department, Department of Corporate Services, Department of Statistics and Information Management, Financial Markets Operations Department, Financial Markets regulation Department and International Banking Department.
Monetary Policy Department, Economic Policy and Research Departments were with Mr. R. Gandhi, whose term ends by this month end. Deputy Governor S S Mundra will take care of Consumer Education and Protection whereas N.S. Vishwanathan will be in charge of Banking Regulation and Department of Communication.
Acharya is a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science from IIT-Mumbai, and PhD in Finance from NYU-Stern. He was with London Business School during 2001-08 and was the Academic Director of the Coller Institute of Private Equity at LBS during 2007-09. Also he was a senior Houblon Normal Research Fellow at the Bank of England during summer 2008.
