Directions have come from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to the Private and public sector banks to ensure setting of Aadhar enrollment centres at least at one out of ten branches in the coming weeks. Necessary amendments have been effected in the Aadhar regulations to accommodate this condition. ,
- Presently there are around 25,000 active enrollment centres PAN India, which operate from their own location/premises. They are not operated from Bank premises.
- The setting up of Aadhar enrolment centres at the bank branches would ensure fast and secure updation.
- Also, there are around 1,20,000 bank branches in the country and with the introduction of this rule, 12,000 additional Aadhar enrolment and updation centres would come up in these bank branches.
- This will also facilitate convenient operation of the accounts, since Aadhar is made compulsory for any new as well as existing bank accounts.
- Above all, with the secure and safe environment, the chances of complaints of corruption and over charging can be weeded out.
- Enrolment for Aadhar will be allowed for Private Sector Banks, once they are appointed as REGISTRARS.
- Though many banks are already REGISTRARS, enrollment centres have not been set up in their bank premises.
NOTE:
- It may be noted that the 12 digit biometric identity number Aadhar is mandatory for opening of bank accounts and also for any financial transaction exceeding Rs. 50,000.
- The existing bank account holders have been advised to quote the Aadhar number by December 31, 2017, failing which their accounts will be blocked and will not be operational.
