When you think about it, the most valuable thing on your computer or network is the data you create.  Operating systems and applications can always
be reinstalled, but user-created data is unique and if lost, may be irreplaceable.

Some data is confidential and exposure of your social security number, credit card, and bank account information could subject you to identity theft.  Few of the options suggested to protect your data are:

  1. Back up early and often
  2. Use file-level and share-level security to keep others out of your data
  3. Password-protect documents to protect many productivity applications
  4. Use EFS encryption for Security reasons and better performance
  5. Use disk encryption and when written to the hard disk data is auto encrypted
  6. Make use of Public key infrastructure
  7. Hide data with steganography to hide data inside other data
  8. Protect data in transit with IP security
  9. Secure wireless transmissions
  10. Use right management to retain control

However, data privacy is also of utmost importance when we are interested in protecting our data.  Let us see the difference between the two.

      Data Privacy      Data Protection
Refers to how a organization or user determines whether or what data to be shared with third parties. Ex: In a bank lot many have customers’ data and keeping its privacy is important. Data not to be leaked. Refers to keeping data secret and is about authorized access and information privacy. Ex: A bank has lot of customers, so the bank needs to protect all types of data including self bank records as well as customer information from unauthorized access.
